Montserrat sits about an hour from Barcelona, with several ways to reach the monastery — most visitors combine a train with either the rack railway or the cable car for the final ascent.

By train + rack railway (cremallera)

Take the FGC R5 line (Barcelona–Manresa) from Barcelona-Plaça Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat (about 1 hour). From there, the rack railway climbs to the monastery in around 15 minutes, with departures roughly every 20 minutes. Monistrol de Montserrat also has free parking for around 900 cars and coaches. By train + cable car (Aeri)

Take the same FGC R5 line and get off one stop earlier, at Aeri de Montserrat. The cable car covers the ascent in about 5 minutes, with departures roughly every 15 minutes — faster, but not recommended if you're uncomfortable with heights.

By car

Free parking is available near both the rack railway and cable car stations at the base of the mountain, as well as at the monastery itself (subject to availability on busy days).

By bus

Direct bus services run from Barcelona on certain days — check current routes and schedules before your visit.
